my process
A clear and thoughtful process creates ease throughout the book design journey.
Each project follows a carefully structured timeline, with dedicated moments for every step—so the work can unfold calmly, with clarity and continuity from beginning to completion.
step 1: preparation
manuscript preparation (optional)
If your manuscript needs preparation, I can gently bring it into a clean and consistent format before the layout process begins.
(This includes technical formatting only. No editing or content changes are made.)
Timing: approx. 2 weeks
Required: near-final manuscript
book cover design (optional)
page design
The cover of a book is its first meeting with the reader.
It is created through a thoughtful and collaborative process, shaped by your vision and the essence of the text.
Based on your direction, I will develop a small number of carefully considered cover concepts. From there, we refine the chosen direction together until it reaches a quiet sense of clarity and balance.
The spine and back cover will be completed in the final stage.
Timing: approx. 2 weeks
Required: near-final manuscript; completed design form
At this stage, the visual language of your book begins to take form.
I will design a small selection of sample pages, exploring typography, spacing, and structure. This includes body text, headings, chapter openings, and any additional elements that shape the reading experience.
Together, we refine these elements into a clear and consistent system, which becomes the foundation for the full layout.
Timing: approx. 2 weeks
Required: final manuscript; completed design form
step 2: design
typesetting
Your manuscript is now shaped into its final form.
Page by page, the text is carefully set using the approved design system—bringing rhythm, structure, and readability into alignment.
You will receive a first proof as a PDF for review.
Timing: approx. 2–6 weeks, depending on length and complexity
Required: approved page design
step 3: production
author review
This is a moment to read your book as it will appear in print.
Small errors may reveal themselves at this stage—this is natural and part of the process. You are invited to review the text carefully, or to pass it to a proofreader if needed.
Edits are marked directly in the PDF and returned for refinement.
Timing: approx. 1–2 weeks
refinement
Your corrections are gently integrated into the layout.
You will receive an updated proof for final review. Up to two rounds of refinement are included to ensure clarity and completion.
Timing: approx. 1–2 weeks
step 4: final steps
full cover completion (optional)
With the interior complete, the full cover is finalized.
This includes back cover text, spine, and any additional elements required for print production. All parts are brought into alignment as a cohesive whole.
Timing: approx. 1 week
final approval
Before printing, you will review the complete book one final time.
Once approved, the final files are prepared and delivered for print or distribution.
Timing: approx. 1 week
ebook formatting (optional)
If desired, your book is carefully adapted into a digital format.
The structure and clarity of the print version are preserved as much as possible, creating a smooth reading experience across devices.
Timing: approx. 1–2 weeks
final files
All final files are prepared with care and delivered in professional formats, ready for printing or digital distribution.
bookbinding (optional)
Bookbinding is offered as a small, handcrafted extension of this work.
Each book is bound slowly and with attention, using simple, durable techniques that honor the material and the text it carries.
Because of the time and care involved, only a limited number of books can be created in this way.
Timing: approx. 7–14 days
